100 words – Nothing

Dianne had barely glimpsed her son before he’d been taken away to be cleaned and she, utterly exhausted, had fallen into a deep and dreamless sleep. Sometime later a movement nearby woke her. A young nurse was settling the baby into a crib beside the bed. Noticing that Dianne had woken, the nurse, ‘Jackie’ the badge on her crisp, starched shirt read, carried the child over to his mother. Before she had registered what was happening, Dianne looked down to find the baby nestled in her arms.

She felt nothing.

She called Jackie back.

“Please take him. I feel tired.”
